SKETCHING AND DRAWING
Below are my sketches from experimenting with different drawing techniques.
First I sketched an onion that was placed in front of me, not taking note of my sketching style.
I then tried to draw the same onion, this time using only the stippling method. Stippling is the creation of forms or patterns using only dots.
I then tried to draw the same onion using only the cross-hatching technique. Cross Hatching refers to giving something depth by using overlapped lines in different directions.
We then applied these drawing techniques to a chair, first sketching it organically, then employing cross-hatching to give it an alternate look.
We also introduced graphite to give a contrasting effect, where the object (chair) stands out against the dark background.
After this, we did short, timed sketching activities in which we had 30 seconds to draw the chair with our non-dominant hand and compare the drawings.
I really enjoyed these various sketching activities because it allowed me to explore unconventional ways of drawing. I can take techniques with me and apply them throughout the course of my degree.
